Why People Overheat at Night

Overheating at night is rarely about the room. It is about trapped moisture, insulating fabric, and a body clock that expects to cool down.

Your body is trying to cool down

In the ninety minutes before sleep, the brain sends heat outward through the hands and feet. Core temperature drops. This drop is the trigger for slow wave sleep.

If that heat cannot escape, the process stalls. You feel restless, kick off the covers, and cycle in and out of light sleep. This is what most people call overheating, even when the room is a normal temperature.

The feeling is often described as heat, but the underlying signal is failure to cool. The brain wanted a drop, did not get it, and stays alert.

Where the heat gets stuck

Three layers sit between your skin and the room. The fabric you wear, the sheets, and the duvet. If any one of them traps moisture, the whole system fails.

The fabric layer usually fails first. Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it. Polyester repels sweat but does not breathe. Both leave a warm, damp film on your skin. The body reads that film as a signal that it is still too hot and stays alert.

The sheet is next. Sateen weaves and microfibre both slow airflow. A percale cotton or a lyocell sheet lets heat leave faster.

The duvet is last. Down and wool are self regulating and generally fine. Polyester filled duvets vary widely.

Common triggers that are easy to fix

A late meal, especially one heavy in protein or spice, raises core temperature for hours. Digestion is exothermic. Aim to finish the last real meal at least two hours before bed.

Alcohol widens blood vessels early and then rebounds, spiking temperature around 3am. This is why one glass of wine at dinner is different from three glasses at 10pm.

A hot shower right before bed helps the drop begin, but only if the sleep environment lets heat continue to leave.

Room temperature between 17 and 19 degrees celsius is a good target for most adults. Colder is fine if the bedding matches.

Hormonal and life stage causes

Perimenopause and menopause cause vasomotor symptoms that peak at night. The trigger is a narrower thermoneutral zone in the hypothalamus. A small rise in core temperature that would not have been felt at thirty five sets off a hot flush at fifty.

Late pregnancy raises baseline core temperature by roughly half a degree celsius. Sleep discomfort follows.

Thyroid conditions, some medications such as SSRIs, and certain fevers also raise nighttime temperature. If overheating is new and severe, rule these out with a doctor before blaming the mattress.

Things that get blamed but usually are not the cause

The mattress. Unless it is memory foam without any cooling layer, the mattress rarely creates heat on its own. It stores what you give it. Fix the layer above it first.

The room. A cool room with the wrong sleepwear still runs hot at skin level. A warm room with breathable sleepwear often feels neutral.

The partner. Human bodies release around seventy to a hundred watts of heat. Two of them under one duvet is real, but the fix is a two person duvet setup, not a colder room.

The reliable fix

Pull moisture off the skin quickly. Let air move through the knit. Keep the weight of what you wear low. Do this at the layer closest to your body and the rest of the system starts working the way it was designed to.

Combine that with a room at 17 to 19 degrees celsius, a percale or lyocell sheet, and a duvet weight matched to the season. That is the entire recipe.
