What Is Ultrafine Merino Wool and Why It Matters for Sleep

Merino is sorted by the average diameter of a single fibre, measured in microns. Strong wool sits above 24 micron and goes into carpet and outerwear. Fine merino runs around 18 to 19 micron. Ultrafine sits at 17.5 micron and below, and superfine grades go lower still.

A finer fibre bends more easily. That is the whole story behind how wool feels. It also means more fibres per gram of yarn, more surface area, and a lighter fabric at the same coverage.

A label that says merino with no micron figure is telling you nothing useful. Ask for the number.

Prickle is a mechanical response, not an allergy. Nerve endings in the skin register pressure when a fibre end is stiff enough to push in rather than flex. Coarse fibres above roughly 22 micron do that. Under 17.5 micron the fibre collapses against the skin and the receptors never fire.

This is why people who cannot wear a wool jumper sleep comfortably in ultrafine merino. It is a different grade of the same raw material.

True wool allergy exists but is rare. Most reported wool reactions are prickle, or a reaction to processing chemistry rather than to the fibre.

Merino absorbs water vapour into the fibre core while the outer surface stays water repellent. Moisture is taken up before it becomes liquid sweat on the skin, then released into the air as conditions allow.

The fibre can hold a large share of its own weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch. Cotton feels damp at a fraction of that.

There is a second effect. As merino absorbs vapour it releases a small amount of heat, then cools again as it dries. The swing is gentle, which is exactly what a sleeping body wants.

Odour comes from bacteria acting on sweat at a damp surface. Merino keeps that surface dry, and it binds odour compounds inside the fibre until a wash releases them.

The practical result is that a merino set can be worn several nights and aired in between. No silver, no antimicrobial finish, no added chemistry.

Each merino fibre has a natural crimp and behaves like a spring. It can be bent tens of thousands of times and return to shape. This is why a merino knit does not bag at the knees and elbows the way a viscose knit does.

That recovery is also why merino needs no elastane. Adding elastane is the usual fix for a fibre that cannot return to shape on its own.

Mulesing is a surgical practice used on some merino flocks to prevent flystrike. It is avoidable, and a growing share of the clip is certified non mulesed.

Traceability means the fleece can be followed back to named growers rather than bought as an anonymous lot at auction. If a brand cannot say where the wool was grown, assume it does not know.

Chlorine free processing matters too. The standard shrink resist treatment strips the fibre scales with chlorine. Chlorine free routes exist and leave the fibre intact.

A stated micron figure at 17.5 or below. 100% merino rather than a blend. A weight between roughly 150 and 200 grams per square metre for sleepwear. A knit rather than a woven, because knits move with the body.

Non mulesed certification. A named processing route. No silicone softener, no PFAS finish, no optical brighteners.

Merino blended below fifty percent, where the other fibre sets the behaviour. Any polyester content, which cancels the breathability you paid for. Merino sold without a micron grade.

Softness that comes from a silicone finish. It feels good in the shop and blocks the moisture movement that makes wool worth wearing.
